A small, longhaired dilute calico molly with tufted ears and pale violet eyes.
Kestrelpaw is small -- had she not been an only kit, she likely would have been the runt of her litter. In spite of this, she remains well-muscled and stocky in stature. Her fur is long and soft, still bereft of any major scars. The tips of her ears are tasselled with long tufts, giving her a vaguely lynx-like appearance. She is a dilute calico, and her pelt is splatters of grey and light ginger atop a white canvas. And with eyes the colour of lavender petals, she sees the world. |
personality
abrasive. aggressive. snarky. rebellious. stubborn. free-spirited. short-tempered. sarcastic. wisecracking. jocular. clever. insecure.
A tumultuous kithood has shaped young Kestrelpaw into what she is now: a rebellious apprentice who seemingly has little care for others. Snappish, impulsive, and self-assertive are all good words to describe her. She is a mercurial thing, a short fuse that can rarely be cooled down. She is the type to act before thinking and when it comes to solving a dispute, she favours violence over words. A free spirit, Kestrelpaw prefers to do things her way and even shirks authority at times. A standoffish disposition seems to never leave her side. It is not out of the ordinary to hear Kestrelpaw delivering deadpan remarks, and when she isn’t, she’s probably at least thinking them in her head. Underneath her brash exterior, she has the desire to do better; to move on with her life and belong. However, she is still too filled with contempt and anger to simply accept things and move on. She doesn’t even know how to let go -- rebellion has been her way of coping for as long as she can remember, and she clings to it like moss to a rock. She secretly resents herself, believing herself to be a burden. Although it may not seem like it from an outsider’s perspective, she does care for others and once she has forged a friendship, she will do everything in her power to keep it. Once one gets past the non-stop aggression, snark, and insubordination, they will find a troubled soul beneath the surface. |
history
Maplehaze was a fierce warrior, but an awful mother.
Her little tryst with Breezewhisker, a fellow FireClan warrior, was not much more than a one-night stand. Their chemistry was next to nonexistent and their mating had occurred solely due to Maplehaze being in heat at the time. A couple moons later, she gave birth to a single kit -- a little bundle of fur that she named Kestrelkit. From the start, Kestrelkit was far more brash than most other kits her age. She took after her volatile mother, who was a firm believer in “tough love”. Maplehaze was never super affectionate with her and with every passing moon, grew more and more irritated by the fact that she was effectively tethered to the nursery for a good few moons. The queen blamed her sole kit for this -- not that she admitted it to Kestrelkit’s face. Kestrelkit was able to read between the lines, however, and what would later become self-loathing began to develop. In spite of everything, Kestrelkit did have two friends -- a pair of siblings named Spiderkit and Magpiekit. Their mother, Sparkflight, nurtured the neglected kit, treating her as as if she were her own when Maplehaze was absent from the nursery. Later on, Kestrelpaw would come to view them as her true family, more so than even her biological mother. Three moons into Kestrelkit’s life, Silverbeak came into the picture. He was an old friend of Maplehaze’s -- a tom that warmed her icy exterior, acted as her light in the dark, and all that mousebrained cheesy nonsense. At least, that’s what Kestrelkit gathered from her mother’s mentions of him. There were times when Maplehaze would leave the nursery for what seemed like eons on end just to be with her new lover. Kestrelkit still had yet to meet Silverbeak, but she already didn’t like him. He took her mother away and made her feel even more likely, and that was practically a crime to the young kit. Little did the young kit know that her dislike for the tom would only grow stronger from here on in. One day, without thinking, Silverbeak made the reckless decision to go to the nursery in order to bring Maplehaze some fresh-kill. However, Maplehaze was actually outside of the nursery looking for him. Upon his entering, he spotted Kestrelkit and the influence of red-gaze overtook him. He lunged at the kit in a sort of feral frenzy, unsheathed claws reaching out to grab her. Thankfully, Sparkflight intervened before he could inflict any real damage upon Kestrelkit and shooed him from the nursery, but this furthered Kestrelkit’s resentment of the tom. From that day forward, Kestrelkit began viewing Silverbeak as a threat -- to her, to her mother, and to FireClan itself. Eventually, Kestrelkit was made an apprentice and became Kestrelpaw. Her world was turned upside down when the Sun-quake raged through FireClan. Liquid flame burnt and entombed many cats, and she watched as her mother suffered the same fate. Her paws surged forward, hoping to free Maplehaze from her magmatic prison. It was no use, however. Smoke entered her lungs and obscured her vision long before she could reach her mother, and the lava inched closer and closer… “Run!” screamed Maplehaze, and with that, she did. That would be the last thing she would ever hear her mother say, let alone the last time she would ever see her. She fled for her life, her mind practically on autopilot and unable to process what she had just witnessed. Kestrelpaw ran as fast as her legs could take her, her mind whirling and her ears ringing. When Pinefire outlawed belief in StarClan, Kestrelpaw left with the rest of Emberstar’s band, becoming part of the newly-founded EmberClan. She did not believe in StarClan, for her life had been far from easy in the short time she had been alive and she , but she wanted to stay with her found family: Spiderpaw, Magpiepaw, and Sparkflight. And perhaps she also wanted to get far, far away from Silverbeak. |
